Elaboration of Master plan for the waters of "Amvrakikos River Basin"
Target of the action is the making of a flexible instrument for the water management in Amvrakikos area, that will be used in the implementation of an effective environmental policy.
This action concerns the drafting of a master plan for waters of Louros and Arahthos watershed, of the smaller rivers and ditches, and of the Amvrakikos Gulf. This master plan will be based on the requirements of the Water and the Habitat Directives and it will perform as a flexible instrument for practicing a policy. It will include the complete recording of all the water inputs and outputs to the final recipient (Amvrakikos Gulf – watershed basins of Louros and Arahthos) and will use simulation models to estimate the effect of any intervention on the hydrologic balance.
More specifically, it will present the optimum scenarios for the execution of the establishment of a real time water monitoring system and the enhancement of water circulation between Amvrakikos gulf and the sea. At the same time, the master plan will include a systematic monitoring of all pollution sources as well as the pollutant amounts ending up in each water recipient of the area. Using both previous and new measurements of the surface water quality, the mathematical model will also present a qualitative sequence of water quality.
It should be mentioned that the Department of Water Resources (Ministry of Development) has already created, a decade ago, a quantitative model of the hydrologic balance of Louros and Arahthos watersheds. Therefore, the present action can exploit the existing information and focus on the quality elements of water, in order to extend the pre-existed model to include the Gulf and the lagoons.
Results
- A systematic assessment of all essential parameters influencing the quality and quantity of water in the ecosystems of Amvrakikos.
- Estimation of effectiveness of planned or future actions.
- Information that will help better planning of other actions.
- Impact assessment of any future event that may influence the quality and quantity of water in the ecosystems of Amvrakikos.
